Mark Painter, Assistant Judge, Chef Greg Barnhill, Eugenia Bone, Principal Judge
and Rick Petrocelly, Assistant Judge See Kemper Studios for all Chefs' Gala photos.
Thank you to all who attended and participated in our
27th Annual Chefs' Gala & Silent Auction!
Please patronize all of our 24 participants. Colorado Springs should be proud of the number of incredibly talented chefs in our community!
Judging a cooking competition is always a nightmare: It's either tough on your belly because the food is kind of bad but you still have to taste it all, or it is tough on your belly because the food is exceptional and you eat way too much of it. The Colorado Spring Chorale Gala chefs were VERY tough on my belly because there were too many very good dishes. What a fabulous collection of competitors! It was humbling. And I am still digesting.
Eugenia Bone, Principal Judge

Colorado Springs Chorale’s
Chefs’ Gala Announces Winners
An enthusiastic crowd attending the Colorado Springs Chorale’s 26th Annual Chefs’ Gala at the Antlers Hilton on Sunday, March 6, applauded the selection of Chef Gregory Barnhill of Charles Court at the Broadmoor as “Best of Show” and “First Place Entrée” for his recipe entitled “Fourth of July in March” consisting of Coffee and Chocolate Crusted Pork Tenderloin, Crispy Pork Belly and Smoked Shoulder with Compressed and Roasted Watermelon, Cornbread Galette, Blue Cheese Slaw, and Mustard BBQ Sauce.
Chef Andrew T. Darrigan of the Food Designers was awarded First Place in the Appetizers category for his “Whiskey-Braised Short Rib Empanada” while the “Cappuccino Mousse Trifle” creation of Chef Audrey Landress of the Antlers Hilton was first in Desserts.
Honored as “People’s Choice” was Chef Dion Samsel, of the El Paso Club for his “Rioja and Red Chili Braised Bison Short Rib.”
Chefs’ Gala is a competition between 23 chefs from the finest restaurants and caterers in the region in the categories of appetizers, entrees, and desserts, during which attendees who have purchased a ticket get to sample the chefs’ entries. The Chefs' Gala raises funds to support the continued performances of the Colorado Springs Chorale, a professional, auditioned 120-voice premier symphonic chorus.
Principal Judge, Jerry Anne Di Vecchio, led the judging team consisting of Carrie Stebbins and Stephanie Cardwell. Ms. Di Vecchio, currently of San Francisco, is the former Food and Wine Editor for Sunset Magazine. Ms. Stebbins is currently an instructor in the College of Culinary Arts at Johnson & Wales University in Denver. Ms. Cardwell, who graciously stepped in at the last moment due to the illness of another judge, is a retired local chef who is actively involved in fighting hunger in our community. When the judging process was complete, Teresa Farney, Gazette’s Food Editor, presented the awards.
