Who is MOSAIC?

MOSAIC was formed in the fall of 1990 to be an ambassador group for the Colorado Springs Chorale but, more importantly, to educate and entertain the community using a rich variety of choral music. The group's name reflects a recognition that there are many different musical idioms and styles that contribute to the richness of our musical heritage.  MOSAIC's repertoire reflects this diversity including works from Renaissance to Jazz, from Bach to the Beatles. Much of this repertoire is "a cappella" (unaccompanied), showcasing the full capacity of the voice as a musical instrument in its own right.

More on the Mission

The educational and entertainment aspects of MOSAIC's mission are served in a variety of ways. MOSAIC performs at both public and private engagements. The group has performed for many professional associations, non-profit organizations, schools, company parties, birthdays, anniversaries, weddings, and other special events. For charitable organizations, non-profit institutions, schools, and other civic organizations, the group will perform at a reduced fee as part of its community service mission. As you can see, MOSAIC reaches a very wide audience from children to senior citizens. MOSAIC also has an extensive holiday season program.

Who is MOSAIC

MOSAIC comprises 12 voices (3 sopranos, 3 altos, 3 tenors and 3 basses) plus its Musical Director and Accompanist, Daniel S. Brink. While all of MOSAIC's members have considerable musical experience, most members are part-time musicians with other demanding careers. Having 3 voices per part allows the group to perform even when a small number of its members are unavailable.

What do we sing?

MOSAIC's repertoire has grown significantly since the group's inception in 1990. While MOSAIC maintains a broad range of different styles, certain signature styles have emerged in direct response to audience interest, as well as the vocal attributes and interests of the members. These styles include "Big Band Era" music with music from the 30's and 40's; "Vocal Jazz" with arrangements by Gene Puerling, Kirby Shaw, Manhattan Transfer, etc.; and "Contemporary A Cappella" arrangements in the style of the King's Singers, the Singers Unlimited, the Swingle Singers, the Real Group, etc.  For any given program, MOSAIC's Director will typically select a mixture of works with different styles depending on the occasion, type of audience, and performance location.

How Do I Join MOSAIC?

Vacancies in MOSAIC are filled as they become available, typically annually. MOSAIC members are drawn from the membership of the Colorado Springs Choral Society.  Hence, prospective MOSAIC members must first audition for and be accepted into the Colorado Springs Chorale. Then they are required to undergo another rigorous audition which evaluates the individual's musical skills and assesses the suitability of his or her voice to blend with existing voices in the group. This "blending" of voices is critical to the performance quality of a group of this size, particularly for unaccompanied music. In most instances, members are required to memorize all music for performance. This contributes to the excellent musical synergy and stage presence of the group. Also, the group uses choreography and staging for some of its performances.
